FEAR!
Well that got your attention didn’t it? We all have fears, even the people who deny them. We may have fears about, money, health, death, the end of a relationship, business failure, job loss. The list is endless and the number of books that are written on this topic are almost as endless.
So, what can I possibly suggest for you in a brief blog? I guess some simple steps to address fear are the place to start.
1. Identify the fear. Sometimes that make take a bit of work. The fear may feel big and overwhelming so you need to ask questions. What am I afraid of? What is it related to? Keep digging the answer is there.
2. Now, analyze the fear. Is it real? if, for example, you are afraid of losing your job then you have another whole series of questions to ask yourself: am I doing my best work? is there something i can improve? is this just old anxiety with no basis in fact? can I discuss this with my boss? The answers to these questions will tell you a lot about your fear and should lead you to your next steps.
3. Now that you know if your fear is real or just a product of your own anxiety, pick one thing to do to overcome it. Going back to your job, are you feeling shaky because you know you have a habit of being late? Yes, its only 5 minutes and its consistent. Then your next step is to get up 15 minutes early and get out the door 15 minutes early. Be consistent in your practice and you may find you boss is happier and your fear has gone down.
Really the truth about Fear is that you acknowledge it, analyze it and then get out and do something about it. It may take awhile and the results will surprise you.
